How to Prepare Your Home for a New Kitten

Bringing home a kitten is exciting, but your home may contain many things that are unfamiliar or potentially unsafe for a curious young cat.

Preparing your home before your kitten arrives can make the transition easier.

Start with one quiet area where your kitten can settle.

Provide food, water, a litter tray, a comfortable sleeping area and appropriate toys.

Once your kitten becomes comfortable, you can gradually allow them to explore more of the home.

Kittens are naturally curious and may investigate almost anything.

Check your home for:

Scratching is normal cat behaviour.

Providing appropriate scratching surfaces gives your kitten somewhere suitable to scratch while also allowing them to stretch and exercise.

A new kitten may feel overwhelmed during their first few days.

Boxes, covered beds and other safe hiding areas can give them somewhere to retreat when they need space.

Play is an important part of kitten development.

Use toys that are appropriate for kittens and supervise play where necessary.

Avoid toys with small parts that could become detached and swallowed.

There is no need to give your kitten access to the entire house immediately.

Let them become comfortable at their own pace.

Spend time with them and allow them to explore when they feel ready.

Every kitten is different.

Some will confidently explore immediately, while others may need several days to become comfortable.

Patience during the first few days can help your new kitten feel secure and begin settling into their new home.
